Last batch of photos from my February trip to Białowieża. :) The plan was to catch White-Tailed Eagles but unfortunately they were very uncooperative. Better part of the day there were a lot of Eurasian Jays hanging around the hideout and two Buzzards checking the area. But they came when it was already very dark and the photos are very grainy and unsatisfying to me. So not exactly what I was hoping for. :) In the end I had to choose something from couple dozens of Jay photos. ;)

In the spring of 2018 I went to hike to Śnieżnik mountain, starting from Międzygórze village. Unfortunately the trail I wanted to take was closed at that time and I also arrived a bit late so I ended up wandering around the village and took a few shots.

Late in 2017 I was on a 4 day workshop in Jizera Mountains on Czech side. We visited few places, got up at 4am, climbed the mountain in the dark, took photos, came down to rest and eat and in the afternoon climbed another place, took photos and came back in the dark. I must tell that it was very tiring. I was expecting a little better photos but you can’t really control weather (although it was not all bad) and I wasn’t really “feeling” all the places. But it was fun I do not regret doing it. And I really needed a group nudge to wake up and climb a mountain so early in the morning, basically doing it being half asleep. :)

Late in 2016 I went to visit Pstrąże, given rumours that it is being demolished (which was true). It's an old village, in Dolnoslaskie voivodeship, first mentioned in 1305. It was your usual village up until 1905 when it was modernized for the needs of German army. They built barracks, stables, provided bridge with railway connection (which is now the main entrance to the city for the explorers). After year 1945 the village was seized by Russians and used as military base till 1992. Russians change the name to Strachów (Страхув) for the time they were in charge. When Russian army left it fell under control of Polish army, which is patrolling the area till today. In late 2016, local administration started to demolish old living flats that were constructed by the Russians. Older, German buildings were left intact, for the time being. This village is sometimes referred as "Polish Pripyat".

Enjoying an early spring Sunday hike in Bystrzyckie Mountains.

So this Sunday I took advantage of a lovely, spring weather and decided to go hiking. I picked up Bystrzyckie mountains, as this is the region I rarely visit. The weather was amazing, just recently I was still wearing my winter jacket. The amount of snow was a little too much though, I ended too many times up above my knees in the snow. Photos aren't anything special, but here they are..

European Bison - the biggest mammal in Europe.

This years trip to Białowieża was in far less extreme weather conditions. Considering last year temperatures (below -20*C), this was almost a tropic with temperatures being around 0*C. I didn't have much luck with bison. We found early in the day 2 bulls feasting on the haystack, which is not very photogenic. Later that day we found two bigger herds and one of them was pretty far away and really not cooperative, started going away as we tried to approach it. The second one was more human-friendly. Most of the photos comes from the last encounter.
Still waiting for my shot of fighting bisons. Almost got one this time. ;)

         Welcome in 2018! :)

I was starting to fell itchy just sitting around on my butt and I needed to go somewhere and change my surroundings. I figured hiking would be nice, thought about a place that will not be too much exhausting, as I didn't hike for a few months, also not too far away, and there I was - Owl Mountains. The weather was good, around 0*C, almost no wind, beautiful snowy landscapes. The one thing that was missing was a little bit of sun. A lot of people had the same idea for that day, but that didn't spoil anything.

Second day of my wildlife photo trip to Białowieża forest.

The second day was rather lazy with little activity near the hide. There was a single male Mallard, single Common Crane wandering around almost all day, single Red Fox, few Common Wood Pigeons that landed so far that none of the photos looks good enough (the same goes for Eurasian Jay). At the end of the day few Roe Deers came along with some Eurasian Bisons. So, to sum up, not so many photos from that day.

Last day of shooting was short, we only had in plan to capture Eurasian Pygmy Owl, the smallest Owl in Europe. We started early in the morning with snow and cold. I hoped for some nice weather (it was end of April), but naah. Also the Owl wasn't very cooperative as it was sitting on high branches and there was no possibility to get close enough for some nice shots. So here are only few that look good enough to put them on the Internet. :)

After I packed and got ready to leave the weather changed and the day became sunny and warm. Puszcza Bialowieska this time of a year was especially beautiful with all the ground forest covered with a carpet made of little white flowers. Absolutely stunning view which I tried to capture on the camera but it really does not give the beauty of it.

This weekend I took a short trip to Table Mountains. Since I've been there many times I didn't take much photos. Turned out, that I missed a monkey resembling stone formation before. And I've done hiking trail over Szczeliniec Wielki over 5 times already.. It really does look like a monkey, doesn't it? :)

I have also visited a place I've never been to before. It's what was left of Karol's Fort, which was built in 1790 by Prussian king Frederick William II to guard the border between Prussia and Austria. There's really almost nothing left except for a stone window and a viewing platform (that held 2 cannons). The view from the platform came out really bad, so no photos today, maybe next time. ;)

Here are few shots from my last mountain hike. Getting fit for Bulgaria trip next week. :) 21 km in 5 and half hour, not so bad. Plan was for 24 km, but I was feelin' kinda tired, so I shortened it up a bit. The weather was rather cold and windy but I deliberately chose that over sunny Sunday to have more space on the track.

I took advantage of the gorgeous weather this weekend and went for a hike. It was my first real hike this year and I enjoyed it very much. Also my company was a delight making the trip even more pleasurable. Even though here in the city everybody had long forgotten about snow and winter, in the mountains the conditions are still quite winterish. A few times I ended up over my knees in the snow. At home I saw how much red my face got from the sun. :)

I don't usually take photos on music concerts, but this time was different, because it's my work friend band and I wanted them to have additional photo coverage from that day. They aren't known, but their progressive-metal/rock music fits in my ear very well. Right now they are working on their first demo.

So, last weekend I took advantage of not-so-bad weather and went to the mountains. It was around 0*C, foggy, humid and hiking up was a bit tricky due to slippery path. On the top of Szczeliniec Wielki the visibility was really low, just up to 15-20 meters but snow with wind made for some interesting sculptures. :)

I can see many people coming here, lured by my photos from first edition of Code::Dive programming conference. I guess it's time to post a few from 2015 edition. I only took part as a photographer this time, not an organizer and it was a lot of fun for me. Also quite the physical exercise since I had to run many times two floor up - two floor down. There's a slight chance this was my last time, but who knows?

Couple of nights ago there was a slight chance if seeing aurora in Poland, so I went to the nearest not-so-black-but-close-enough place in the 1 hour driving distance from Wrocław. This was my first visit at this specific place and for sure it will not be the last. Of course no aurora was there but the clear sky and low light pollution made the trip worth it.

Yesterday I spent a few hours in abandoned Russian hospital in Legnica. It was build in 1930s and served Wehrmacht. After WWII the Russians took over and left it in 1992. This very large complex, the longest building is 250m long.

During 2014 I was involved in preparing a programming conference in Wrocław called code::dive, organized by Nokia Wrocław. It was a first edition but it went quite well, doing this was exciting but also exhausting to me. During the big day I was responsible (among other people) for photographic documentation of the event, some of my photos were then shared to press and blogs. This kind of job was a first for me and I really loved doing it. I would like to share some of the photos from that day that I personally like.

Łazienkowski Park in Warsaw is a place well known amongst Poles. Everyone heard of it at least once in school. This 76 hectare park and palace complex lies in the Warsaw center and was designed in XVIII century. It looks gorgeous in spring with juicy green trees and bushes and many flowers in different parts of the park. Hungry after winter, red squirrels are all over the place looking for snacks. Below you can see Chopin's statue and an old Orangery.

For the start - I would like to wish all of you many wonderful moments during 2015 year, take the best of it! For myself I wish more courage to reach my goals and, of course, many new good photos. :)

Today I would like to present my Sister's cat - Luna. I spent some time with her during Christmas. Does not look like, but she has been taken from the dumpster. Must have had a classy father since she does not look like a regular cat. Does not like to be touched and not really interested in being a model, but she was patient with me for a while. A big ball of fur...

The Tall Ships Races

2 days in Szczecin, Poland during 2013 summer vacation.

As a part of summer vacation in 2013, I have visited Szczecin during The Tall Ship's Races final. There was a big feast to celebrate the event.

The Tall Ships’ Races are races for sail training “tall ships” (sailing ships). The races are designed to encourage international friendship and training for young people in the art of sailing. The races are held annually in European waters and consists of two racing legs of several hundred nautical miles, and a “cruise in company” between the legs. Over one half (fifty-percent) of the crew of each ship participating in the races must consist of young people.

Between 1973 and 2003 the races were known as The Cutty Sark Tall Ships’ Races, having been sponsored by Cutty Sark whisky. From 2004 to 2010 the races were supported by The City, Province, and Port of Antwerp. The current sponsor of the Tall Ships’ Races 2010–2014 is the city of Szczecin.

Some of the ships were available for touring. Here are some shots from Russian ship Shtandart (built in 1999).

Szczecin is the capital city of the West Pomeranian Voivodeship in Poland. In the vicinity of the Baltic Sea, it is the country’s seventh-largest city and a major seaport. As of June 2011 the population was 407,811. Szczecin's shipyard arena below.

3-dy hiking trip to Karkonosze mountain range in Poland.

Late in the 2013 I went with some work friends to the Karkonosze National Park (Polish: Karkonoski Park Narodowy). It is a National Park in the Karkonosze Mountains in south western Poland, along the border with the Czech Republic. On Friday evening, in the pouring rain, we took our first hike to the Strzecha Akademicka mountain hostel to spend the night there. In the morning the weather was much better.

On the Saturday, we went to Śnieżka (1,603.30 meters a.s.l. (5,260.2 ft)), after that we stopped for dinner at Luční bouda (Czech Rep. side). Quite nice place but overcrowded at that time. Then we continued our hike on Polish-Czech Friendship Trail. Weather got sunny and windy and the views were breathtaking. Mały and Duży Staw lakes looked amazing from the top of the trail. The Park is located in the highest part of the Sudetes.

We spent the night at Odrodzenie mountain hostel. Sunday welcomed us with huge fog and visibility just over couple of meters. We walked in it for about half a day, following our trail leading to Szrenica mountain (1362 m a.s.l.) from were we went straight down to Szklarska Poręba city.

Here are some pics from my short hiking trip to the Great Owl (polish "Wielka Sowa"). When you start from Przełęcz Walimska it's really easy to get to the top (which is 1014 metres in altitude). You can see the path in pink colour.

As you can see below, the weather was sunny and warm (well.. for the autumn), but also windy and partially foggy which gave the nice touch to some of the photos. Enjoy! :)

Few photos from my hiking trip to Szczeliniec Wielki, Stołowe Mountains, Poland.

This weekend, on Saturday, I took a quick trip to the Table Mountains, to Szczeliniec Wielki. Table Mountains is the region I like very much. Peaks are not very high, so you don't have to be in a very good shape to climb them. Forest region is magical with all the rocks and paths between them. This was my third time there. I actually hoped for a little more cloudy weather, but the day turned out to be quite sunny and warm, so no foggy photos that day. ;)

To see this view, you need to climb 665 stairs, but it's definitely worth it. Beautiful both summer and winter (though climbing there in winter can be quite dangerous). The path starts in village Karłów, where you can park your car, and is about 5km long.

Firstly you just climb stairs in the forest (with some rocks for company) to reach height, then you walk more between rocks, sometimes the path gets very narrow, so I wouldn't advise it for someone with claustrophobia. Good boots are a "nice to have" thing because even during summer, the moisture from the rocks is quite strong so path is always wet somewhere.

I didn't find out how is this lake called, but the village it is nearest to, it's Kondratowice. The lake itself is very small, the road there goes through fields and it's quite bumpy. There are some fishes inside (there were a few fisherman there), also a number of mosquitoes was very high and eventually made me leave. But the view was definitely worth it. I also took the chance to practice long time shots. The mountain in the distance is called Ślęża (718 m a.s.l.).

Bieszczady 2013

Photos from summer vacation in 2013 in Bieszczady, Poland.

As a part of summer vacation in 2013 I had the chance to visit wonderful mountain region in south-eastern Poland. After short visit to the Baltic Sea, few days in Greater Poland and few days in Cracow we finally arived there late in the evening. It was something I was planning for years, and finally made it possible! :)

We stayed for the night in a village Berezka, in a house that offered rooms for rent. Very nice place with a shop nearby, but not near any of the hiking trails so a car was a really useful thing. Not necessary though, as many people are willing to give you a ride.

So the first full day there, after a goodnight sleep, we took not so long track to Bukowe Berdo. The trail lead quite long through forest and after that through high grass.

Unfortunately we did not reach Bukowe Berdo (1311 m a.s.l.) peak (altough we were close). We decided to go down because the weather was getting worse and it was also already quite late. As we were driving back it was already the night and the area between villages was a bit scary for the one behind the wheel - absolutely no light, very tight road, turns, turns, turns. We passed some people going back to their cars or sleeping places and they were very hard to see in advance.

The next day was more of a lazy ones, we visited nearby city of Polańczyk that is situated next to Lake Solina. Polańczyk is a quite big (as for this region), tourist city. Many hotels, shops, restaurants (we had a very delicious dinner). Of course I needed to buy some souvenir as I always do.

Solina is a quite big, artificial lake. It was created while building Solina dam with 22 square kilometres area. Water colour is amazing although the beach can be harsh to your naked feet.. It is the biggest artificial lake in Poland. The region is fantastic both for hiking and water sports - something for everybody.

Later that day I decided that I may want to try catch sunset. We found a place in the village Werlas that was a beautiful place, but not really what I was hoping for. I wanted to get near the water, but without the knowledge of terrain it was impossible to do before sun went down.

On the third day we chose pretty popular trail to Halicz, Tarnica. We left our car in Wetlina and started climbing. The weather was great, it was hot and the views were breathtaking. After gaining some height you could only watch and watch.. Move your hear around 360 degrees. :) On the way to Halicz peak (1333 m a.s.l.).

We did not visit Tarnica (1346 m a.s.l.), the highest peak of Bieszczady, we only passed pretty close to it. My legs (ankles to be exact) hurt a lot because of shoes and I had trouble going down. Because of that, even though we still had one more day and first plan was to visit some other peak, the last day was another lazy one. We wanted to check some small waterfall, but when we arrived at the place it turned out that there is so much mud on the trail that it's not possible to get there. On the next day we went home. I am definitely coming back there. :)

Uhh, finally! I took quite some time (over a year) to process couple of shots from 2013 edition of Thanks Jimi Festival that's being held in a beautiful city of Wrocław, Poland. 2013th edition did not have very good weather. It was very cold, a bit rainy, so there was no chance for another Guinness record. 5734 guitarists showed on Wrocław's main town square. The last record comes from 2014 edition (which I did not attend) with 7344 people playing. For more information check official website:

Late in 2012 I went with my photo colleagues to check on old, abandoned locomotive depot in Wrocław, Poland. The place is almost stripped off of everything, it's hard to find information on when it stopped operating.

Urbex time - abandoned brewery.

Early in the 2013 I went with a photo group to visit old brewery. It was pretty damn cold, but the day was exciting. It's a great place for a photo shoot. If I only didn't have so much trouble with my tripod, it would have been even better!

About the place: Górka is a small village near city Sobótka in the south-eastern Poland, in Lower Silesia. Górka Brewery was found in year 1812 by baron Ernst von Luttwitz and was functioning till 1997. Right now, the building is abandoned, slowly turning into ruins.
